Maya Chen founded CLAY & CO in 2017 with a single kick wheel and a vision for a studio where time moved slower.
"Clay remembers every touch."
— Maya Chen, Founder
In late 2017, I spent my last savings on a second-hand Shimpo wheel and a few hundred pounds of stoneware. I didn't have a plan beyond the need to make something real—something that didn't exist behind a screen.
The garage was drafty, the kiln was temperamental, and my first three months of production resulted in more cracks than cups. But in those failures, I found the beauty of the material. I learned that clay has its own timing, and it cannot be rushed.
Today, CLAY & CO has grown into a community of makers, but that original spirit remains. We still use reclaimed water, we still mix our glazes by hand, and we still believe that a thumbprint on the base of a mug is a mark of honor, not a flaw.
We reject the culture of instant gratification. Each piece cures for weeks before the final firing.
Wabi-sabi is at our core. We celebrate the organic wobbles and unique glaze drips.
Our goal is zero waste. We reclaim every scrap of dry clay and recycle our water systems.
Pottery is a communal act. Our studio is a shared space for connection and learning.

No scrap goes to waste. We process all "slop" and trimmings back into usable clay bodies, creating a circular production cycle.
Our glazes are mixed in-house using raw minerals and oxides. They are 100% food-safe and environmentally inert.
Every shipment uses plastic-free, biodegradable cushioning and recycled cardboard boxes. No bubble wrap, ever.
