The journey of ROOTOP began with a single sprout and a view of the Tagus River.
In the spring of 2019, I sat on my small balcony in Lisbon's Graça neighborhood, surrounded by the grey concrete of a rapidly expanding city. I wanted a garden, but I had no ground. I started with a few seeds and a reclaimed wooden crate.
What began as a personal sanctuary quickly grew into a mission. I realized that thousands of urban dwellers shared the same hunger for nature. ROOTOP was born from that first Lisbon rooftop, with a simple goal: to help the city grow up, not just out.
By late 2019, we had transformed three neighbor's roofs into edible gardens. Today, that original vision has blossomed into a global community of urban cultivators.
Our philosophy is rooted in architectural reclamation. We see every flat surface as a potential ecosystem, every balcony as a breath of fresh air, and every windowsill as a step toward urban resilience.
